tadka urad dal


250 Gms urad dal (with skin, washed & soaked overnight in water)

2 tbsp ghee (or mustard oil as to test)

½ tsp cumin seeds

¼ tsp hing (asafetida)

½ tsp turmeric powder

2 tsp coriander powder

Salt to test (1-tsp)

10 flakes garlic cloves (chopped)

2 green chilies (chopped)

2 medium size onions (chopped)

1tbsp green garlic leaves (chopped)


Take dal with 3 cups of water, cook at high pressure for 10 minutes, remove heat, and cool it naturally.

Heat ghee in a pan, add cumin seeds and hing, add garlic & chilies, add onion respectively, fry until light brown, add turmeric, coriander powder and salt, cook for ½ minutes, add boiled dal, continuous stir, cook for 3-4 minutes on mild heat. Remove heat. Mix chopped garlic leaves.

A side dish serves hot with roti or Paratha or rice.
